India wants to rename Jawaharlal Nehru`s hometown
On Tuesday, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh approved a proposal to rename the hometown of Jawaharlal Nehru - Allahabad to Praiaj.
According to the Hindustan Times, the statement by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanat about changing the name of Allahabad caused a mixed reaction from local intellectuals - teachers, literary figures, lawyers and politicians.
According to opponents of renaming, the new name of the city detracts from the meaning it has for freedom fighters in the country, and also bears no meaning.
Allahabad is located at the confluence of three rivers - the Ganges, the Yamuna and the Saraswati. The city was named Allahabad in 1853 by the Mughal emperor Akbar. In 1889, Indira Gandhi’s father, famous world politician Jawaharlal Nehru, was born here.
