The Brazilian Embassy celebrated the country's 200th anniversary of independence
On Wednesday 7 September, a reception was held at the Brazilian Embassy in Moscow to mark Brazil's Independence Day. Guests of honour at the event included Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil to the Russian Federation, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, Head of APEX Brasil Russia Almir Ribeiro Americo, TV BRICS CEO Janna Tolstikova and other dignitaries.
In an interview with TV BRICS, the Brazilian ambassador to Russia explained what the word "independence" means for his country.
"Today is a special date. Today we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Brazilian independence. We celebrate the birth of Brazil as a sovereign nation. Over time, a democratic, free, multicultural and multiethnic society has been created," said Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares.
He noted that Brazil has always advocated a multilateral agenda in international relations. "We believe that a multilateral agenda is the best response to all the crises facing the international community. We are in favour of strengthening the United Nations as a whole, as well as its specialised agencies and bodies, so our policies and actions are aimed at making the world a more democratic place," the diplomat said.
The Brazilian ambassador to Russia added that cooperation within the BRICS framework is very important for the country: "We are in favour of developing both political and economic ties, one example being the New BRICS Development Bank, which Brazil has already taken full advantage of. And also within this organisation we are in favour of further strengthening the interaction of all the five member countries of this association".
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov mentioned that Russia has almost 195 years of diplomatic relations with Brazil.
"We are engaging with this great country in many international arenas - from the UN Security Council, where Brazil will serve as non-permanent member next year, to multilateral institutions in a variety of areas: health, transport, of course, the BRICS. Multilateral interaction in this format is one of the remarkable pages in the Russian-Brazilian relations of the last decade and a half", the Russian diplomat stressed.
On the relations between Brazil and Honduras, the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Honduras in Moscow, Francisco José Martínez Rodríguez, spoke at the reception.
"Historically, there have been warm relations between Honduras and Brazil. This is expressed both in political support for each other and in active trade and economic ties. For our region, Latin America, it is crucial to use all available opportunities to further improve relations between countries. In terms of relations between Brazil and Honduras, we are actively pursuing this both in political contacts and in economic and cultural ones," the diplomat said.
