55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting begins in Phnom Penh
The 55th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting opened in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh on Wednesday. Foreign ministers of the member countries hold consultations on promoting economic recovery, strengthening cooperation in the region and other topical issues.
Cambodia is the next chair of ASEAN in 2022. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said at the opening ceremony that post-economic recovery, regional security issues and responding to climate change are among the main topics of the current meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers. ASEAN should make every effort to build solidarity to ensure that the central role of the organisation is respected. All ASEAN member countries should make a common effort to respond to the challenges in the most effective way.
The meeting is chaired by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, who said the current face-to-face meeting of foreign ministers testifies to the success of ASEAN countries' collective efforts to overcome the pandemic and rebuild their economies. On the margins of the meeting, ASEAN foreign ministers will also discuss a number of key regional and international issues with their dialogue partners, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
