Abu Dhabi's Department of Health starts premarital genetic screening services

These tests screen for over 570 autosomal recessive genes, addressing more than 840 genetic disorders

Abu Dhabi's Department of Health (DoH), in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), has introduced an advanced premarital genetic screening programme to help couples make informed health decisions, fostering a healthier community through preventative care. This is reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

By identifying and mitigating genetic conditions, the programme aims to prevent the transmission of specific hereditary diseases, fostering a healthier community. Currently offered across more than 22 health facilities, these tests screen for over 570 autosomal recessive genes, addressing more than 840 genetic disorders.

The source claims that by identifying high-risk couples, the programme promotes informed discussions on supportive interventions. The initiative not only protects future generations but also empowers couples with essential information for making well-informed health choices.

Capitalising on Abu Dhabi’s advanced healthcare infrastructure, the programme utilises DNA sequencing technology, contributing data to the Emirates Genome Programme to predict and mitigate health risks early on.

This proactive integration of genomic data into clinical practice showcases Abu Dhabi’s commitment to advanced, precision-based healthcare. By incorporating this process into marriage plans, couples can identify potential health risks, plan their families, and contribute to a healthier Abu Dhabi community.
