António Guterres held a press conference on the priorities of the 77th session of the UNGA
On Wednesday 14 September, during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly and on the eve of the High-Level Week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres held a press conference during which he spoke on the priorities of the 77th session and the High-Level Week and answered questions from journalists.
The seventy-seventh session of the General Assembly opens under the theme “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges.” The theme stems from the recognition that the world is at a critical moment in the history of the United Nations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and other issues.
Today António Guterres spoke with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the UN Secretary-General, they discussed different aspects that are relevant to the current situation in the world.
The agenda of the 77th session includes all major international issues, such as climate change, the fight against the coronavirus and other infections, promoting sustained economic growth and sustainable development, maintenance of international peace and security, effective coordination of humanitarian assistance efforts, promotion of justice and international law and other questions.
António Guterres emphasized the necessity of Africa's development. He noted that it is crucial to respond to the needs of the respective peoples of the African countries, developing countries: "We have permanently insisted on the adoption of immediate measures to provide liquidity to these economies, to alleviate the debt of these countries, and at the same time we have insisted on the need for a reform of the global financial system".
A High-Level Week will be held from 21 to 23 September 2022. The event to be attended by heads of state, government and foreign ministers from different countries. Dozens of bilateral and multilateral meetings will be held on the sidelines. The delegates will be able to discuss all topical issues of mutual interest.
