Archaeologists discover 6,000-year-old find in Russia

Such finds are rare in Northwest Russia

In the vicinity of the Yuriev Monastery in Novgorod, archaeologists from the Centre for Archaeological Research of Novgorod State University have discovered a ceramic pot that is about 6000 years old. The research shows that the artefact belongs to the late Neolithic era and was probably made in the second half of the 4th millennium BC.

The vessel measures approximately 60 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height. Archaeologists assume that it belongs to the culture of comb-pit ceramics, as evidenced by its ornamental decoration.

According to scientists, the pot could have been used for storing loose products such as grain, as well as meat or fish, given that the population of the region was actively engaged in hunting and fishing. This is reported by the social media of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The presence of soot on its outer surface also indicates that the vessel may have been used for cooking. More in-depth research will be required to find out exactly how the pot was used.
