The event is part of the initiatives of the BRICS Ministers of Culture meeting, held during Brazil's temporary presidency of the group
From 4 to 7 December, Fortaleza, in Ceará, will host the BRICS Film Festival, organised by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil. This year, the event will include the participation of countries such as South Africa, China, the United Arab Emirates, India, Indonesia, and Russia, according to the official website of the Ministry. The festival is supported by the government of the state of Ceará and the Fortaleza City Hall.
Fourteen films will be presented, covering both feature-length and short films, with a focus on fiction and animation. In addition, the event will feature a rich programme of workshops, roundtables, and meetings with international experts, providing a unique experience of learning and cultural exchange.
Margareth Menezes, Minister of Culture, emphasised that hosting the festival reinforces Brazil's commitment to promoting cultural diversity.
"By hosting the BRICS Film Festival, Brazil reaffirms its commitment to promoting diversity and expanding opportunities for Brazilian audiovisual production. Culture is a force that brings peoples together [...]," she stated.
The Brazilian edition of the festival aims to boost co-productions, foster cultural exchanges, and consolidate cinema as a point of connection between public policies and cultural development, encouraging collaboration and innovation in the sector.
"By bringing together countries of the Global South around their cinematographies, we expand the internationalisation of the sector and strengthen networks of strategic cooperation. This is a tangible contribution of Brazil’s BRICS presidency towards building lasting partnerships within the group," emphasised Bruno Rodrigues, Head of the Special Advisory on International Affairs of the Brazilian Ministry.
Hosting the Film Festival in Brazil is part of the initiatives of the 10th meeting of BRICS culture ministers in Brasilia, during Brazil’s temporary presidency of the group.
