Brazil introduces green certification standard to boost sustainable chemical industry

Brazil has unveiled the first sector-specific technical standard under its Green Seal Programme, targeting ethylene-based polymers derived from renewable sources. Announced in Brasilia, the initiative is designed to establish unified environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria, reinforcing transparency in sustainability assessments and supporting the country’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.

At the core of the programme is the establishment of clear parameters to identify products with lower environmental impact and stronger social responsibility. The initial focus on renewable ethylene polymers reflects their widespread use and strategic importance across diverse production chains, as reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

Secretary for Green Economy, Decarbonisation and Bioindustry at the ministry, Julia Cruz, highlighted the initiative as a driver of competitiveness. She noted that the green component represents a significant advantage for Brazilian industry, creating clearer definitions of sustainable products and supporting the development of public policies while facilitating entry into new markets. 

The initiative is being implemented amid growing global focus on energy transition and emissions reduction. Brazil’s chemical industry, characterised by its cross-sectoral reach, is seen as central to advancing sustainable solutions, from innovative materials to more efficient production processes. 

With a largely renewable energy matrix and reduced carbon intensity compared to global peers, the country is well positioned to expand its role in the green economy. In this context, the Green Seal Programme is expected to guide investment, improve business predictability and reinforce Brazil’s standing as a leader in sustainable industrial development.
