Brazil officially announces Belém as COP30 candidate
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially approved Belém to host COP30 in 2025. "We hope to be able to hold the world's largest climate event in a city located in the Brazilian Amazon," he wrote on his social media.
"I made a commitment in Egypt at COP27 that COP30 could be held in Brazil. I was happy when our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, officially approved the city of Belém as host of the event," the head of state said in a video in the presence of governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho.
In the same video, Helder stressed the importance and magnitude of moving the climate discussion to Brazil. "In Belém, the state of Pará will be discussing the climate situation in the world, looking for solutions to combat climate change, and I thank the federal government for this opportunity, for its confidence in Belém, Pará and the Amazon," said the governor.
COP is the name of the annual conference that brings together all countries that have ratified the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The acronym COP means the Conference of the Parties. The Climate Summit has been held by the UN since 1995, as reported by Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS.
