The Piaui Artificial Intelligence project, developed by the government of Piaui to implement AI as a subject in state schools, has been selected for the 2025 edition of the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize, which recognises initiatives that use Information and Communication Technologies in Education. This was reported by Agência Brasil.

The project was one of four chosen from a total of 86 initiatives submitted by more than 50 countries and non-governmental organisations. According to officials, the Piaui Artificial Intelligence programme has the potential to benefit over 90,000 students each year, reaching 540 state-run schools across the region.

UNESCO highlighted on its website that the Brazilian initiative contributes to the sustainable integration of AI into society, promoting equity and inclusion.

“With the aim of integrating AI into the public school curriculum in the state of Piauí, [...] Piaui Artificial Intelligence offers a three-year learning programme that incorporates AI ethics throughout all its modules and combines digital and in-person activities, making it accessible in low-resource environments,” the organisation said.

Celebrating the project’s selection, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that the Piaui initiative reinforces the country’s commitment to digital technologies and demonstrates pathways for making AI integration into education more accessible.
