Brazilian authorities call on UN to assist in creation of Global Alliance Against Hunger

Brazil's Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Hunger Wellington Dias, during a meeting with UN Under-Secretary General Amina Mohammed, spoke about the proposal to create a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

"The alliance will not belong to the G20, but to all countries and organisations that want to work together. We need the UN's support on two fronts. First, it is necessary that the organisation's offices in member countries serve to coordinate efforts, funding and technical assistance. Secondly, there is a need for a centralised support mechanism for alliance operations within the UN system," the minister explained.

According to a UN report, 735 million people in the world suffer from hunger and 2.3 billion are food insecure. The publication notes that the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva aims to end hunger by 2026.

In 2023, Brazil launched the Brasil Sem Fome programme, through which 24 ministries work together on tasks such as poverty reduction, ensuring food security, organising the production of healthy food, etc.

Lula da Silva came up with the idea of a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty when the country took over as head of the G20. The initiative involves presenting the practical experience of other countries to states that want to adapt and implement this policy on their territory.
