Brazilian government proposes a minimum wage of R$1,302 for 2023
The Ministry of Economy's draft annual budget act (PLOA) stipulates a minimum wage of R$1,302 for 2023.
The amount will increase by R$90 compared to the current minimum wage of R$1,212. The number represents an increase of 7.4%.
The text was released by the federal government late on Wednesday evening (31 August) and sent to the National Congress. The PLOA details all provisions of the fiscal policy, the investment budget and the budget covering the social security area for 2023.
The calculations follow the Ministry of Economic Affairs' forecast for this year's national consumer price index (CPI) in July. The Constitution states that the adjustment of the minimum wage cannot be less than the previous year's inflation.
The budget contains a forecast of 7.2% for the National Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) in 2022.
The new minimum wage could be revised if the official national inflation rate is higher than projected in the bill. This is reported by Metrópoles, a partner of the TV BRICS network.
