BRICS Energy Platform Steering Committee meets to discuss study on human resources in energy transition

The issue of qualified staff in the energy transition was scheduled for consideration at the first meeting

The Russian Secretariat of the BRICS Energy Research Platform based at the Russian Energy Agency of the Ministry of Energy of Russia together with the South African Secretariat of the Energy Platform held the first meeting of the Steering Committee to prepare a study on human resources development in BRICS countries in the energy transition, on 31 may.

The members of the Steering Committee were the largest universities and companies of the BRICS countries, as well as experts from various international organisations.

During the session, the Russian and South African national parts of the study on labour market development and training in the energy sector were presented. The final document will present a list of the most in-demand specialities for the BRICS countries related to the energy transition process as well as best practices in organising cooperation between the government, relevant companies and educational organisations in the field of personnel training and support for the employment of women and young people.

Particular attention during the discussion was paid to the practical implementation of the results of the work done, which could include the creation of joint training programmes or a competence centre on the basis of leading energy companies or universities of the BRICS countries.

"The preparation of the study on human resources for the energy transition has aroused a huge interest not only on the part of the BRICS countries but also on the part of the international organisations. We expect that this study will become a starting point for practical cooperation with partners from the 'Five' countries on labour market development in the context of the energy transition," said Olga Yudina, advisor of Director General of the Russian Energy Agency of the Russian Ministry of Energy.

The next meeting of the Steering Committee is scheduled at the end of July, and the results of the study will be presented in August during the BRICS Energy Ministers Meeting, as reported by Russian Energy Agency.
