BRICS leaders express their condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth II
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, 8 September, at the age of 96 at her Scottish summer residence, Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family said in a statement. Elizabeth II was the monarch of Britain for seven decades. Following the Queen's death, the country began a 10-day mourning period.
BRICS leaders expressed their condolences over the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed His Majesty King Charles III, son of Elizabeth II and the new monarch of Great Britain: "Your Majesty, please accept my deepest sympathy for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. I wish you courage and fortitude in the face of this great and irreparable loss. Please convey my words of sincere sympathy and support to the members of the Royal Family and all the people of Great Britain."
The head of state noted that the most important events in the modern history of the United Kingdom are inextricably linked with Her Majesty's name, as reported on the website of the Russian president. "For many decades, Elizabeth II has rightly enjoyed the love and respect of her subjects, as well as authority on the world stage," the Russian leader stressed.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled his meetings with the Queen during visits to the UK in 2015 and 2018: "I will never forget her warmth and kindness. During one of her meetings, she showed me the handkerchief that Mahatma Gandhi gave her for her wedding. I will always treasure that gesture," Modi wrote on the social media.
According to ANI, a partner of TV BRICS, Modi noted Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as an outstanding personality of our times.
"She was an inspirational leader for her nation and people. She epitomised dignity and integrity in public life. Her passing is painful. My thoughts are with her family and the people of Britain at this sad time," the Prime Minister added.
South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa offered his deepest condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth II in a statement to the new King Charles III: "Her Majesty was a distinguished and world-renowned public figure who lived a remarkable life. Her life and legacy will be fondly remembered by many people around the world."
"The Queen's dedication and selflessness during her 70 years on the throne remains a noble and virtuous example," said the country's leader, as reported by Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.
Chinese President Xi Jinping also sent a telegram of condolences to the new King of the United Kingdom, Charles III, on Friday. The country's leader, on behalf of the Chinese government and people as well as himself, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the British Queen.
He noted that she was the first British monarch to visit China, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro also expressed condolences on the Queen's passing: "It is with great sadness that Brazil receives the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a remarkable and unique woman whose example of leadership, humility and love for her country will continue to inspire us and the world until the end of time."
