BRICS ministers sign Joint Declaration to promote sustainable agriculture
On 17 April 2025, Brasilia hosted the BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture. The gathering brought together BRICS Ministers of Agriculture, Agrarian Development and Family Farming, Fisheries and Aquaculture, who approved and signed a Joint Declaration outlining strategic commitments to sustainable agricultural development and global food security.
The Declaration outlines mechanisms for emergency cooperation among BRICS members in situations of food shortages or sudden price spikes, based on solidarity and mutual assistance. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.
Key measures include strengthening national food reserves, investing in storage infrastructure, and supporting public policies.
On agricultural trade, the Declaration sets goals to reduce unnecessary barriers, improve transparency, and ease the exchange of agricultural products among BRICS members. The introduction of digital certification is expected to streamline bureaucracy.
This meeting also marked the conclusion of the 2021–2024 BRICS Agricultural Cooperation Action Plan and the launch of the 2025–2028 Action Plan.
The BRICS countries collectively represent 54.5 per cent of the global population, possess one-third of the world’s agricultural land, and hold over a third of its fresh water resources, according to Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. Together, these nations are responsible for 75 per cent of global agricultural production and host approximately half of the world’s 550 million family farms.
Concrete targets, deadlines, and initiatives stemming from the Joint Declaration will be submitted for approval at the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled for 6–7 July 2025 in Rio de Janeiro.
