BRICS summer school in Shanghai to bring together students for global governance programme

A summer school dedicated to BRICS cooperation and global governance will take place in Shanghai from 11 to 31 July 2026, bringing together students and early-career researchers from across BRICS countries.

Organised by Fudan University, the Shanghai Summer School (BRICS Programme) is designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of BRICS collaboration, China’s international role, and the dynamics of the Global South. The programme will be held at the university’s Handan Campus.

The three-week course will combine academic lectures with cultural activities. The core academic module, “BRICS Cooperation and Global Governance”, will cover key areas such as the role of BRICS in global governance reform, energy and artificial intelligence cooperation, sustainable development financing through the New Development Bank, and the group’s engagement with regions including Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and South Asia.

A second module, “Happy in Shanghai”, will introduce participants to Chinese culture and urban life, including organised cultural exchanges and visits along the Huangpu River.

The organisers expect around 40 participants, including undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as research fellows. Half of the places will be supported through the BRICS programme, covering tuition, accommodation and insurance, while the remaining participants will attend on a self-funded basis.

Applications are open until 30 April 2026, with final results scheduled to be announced on 12 May.
