Captive breeding of cheetahs is expected by 2025 in Iran
Threats to the cheetah population include habitat destruction by camels and other animals
Iran's Department of Environment (DOE) official Hassan Akbari announced that due to implementation of necessary measures to standardise the captive breeding site of cheetahs, successful breeding of cheetahs is expected by March 2025.
Akbari emphasised that there are currently three female cheetahs at the breeding site.
Habitat protection remains the top priority for the Ministry of Energy, but a standardised captive breeding site is needed to increase the cheetah population, he stressed. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
Challenges facing cheetahs include a small population of no more than 20 individuals in the wild, limited territory and habitat requirements, and decreased availability of prey due to environmental changes.
Threats to the cheetah population include habitat destruction by camels, and an increased risk of collision with vehicles in some areas.
Measures being taken to conserve cheetahs include expanding their habitat, increasing prey numbers and improving road safety.
