Chile unveils its first hydrogen-powered passenger bus for sustainable transport innovation

The bus operates using a hydrogen fuel cell, allowing it to travel up to 600 kilometres on a single charge

Chile has made a new stride in sustainable transport with the unveiling of its first hydrogen-powered passenger bus, a project developed entirely within the country. This innovative vehicle, revealed during a special ceremony, symbolises a pivotal step towards combating environmental pollution and promoting clean energy solutions, as reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

The bus was designed, developed, and manufactured in Chile with the support of public and private entities. The initiative was highlighted during the president’s latest public address as a landmark achievement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With a total investment exceeding approximately US$830,000, the project’s initial aim is to provide advanced transportation solutions for mining operations.

The bus operates using a hydrogen fuel cell, which generates electricity stored in a battery, allowing it to travel up to 600 kilometres on a single charge. Its only by-products are heat and water, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional transport methods.

Testing for the hydrogen bus is set to commence in 2025, including demonstration runs across various regions and educational showcases in communities and schools.
