China builds world’s largest EV charging network

Infrastructure now supports over 40 million electric vehicles nationwide

China has established the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, capable of meeting the charging needs of more than 40 million new energy vehicles, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA). This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

By the end of 2025, the total number of EV charging facilities nationwide had reached 20.092 million, the NEA states. The expansion of charging infrastructure accelerated markedly in 2025, with the network doubling from 10 million to 20 million units in just 18 months.

The average power output per public charging point rose to 46.5 kilowatts, representing a 33 per cent year-on-year increase, reflecting a shift toward higher-capacity and faster-charging solutions.

Infrastructure deployment along major transport routes continued to advance. A total of 71,500 charging piles have been installed at motorway service areas, covering more than 98 per cent of the country’s highways. In addition, 19 provincial-level regions have achieved full charging coverage across all townships.

The continued expansion of charging infrastructure is supporting the rapid growth of China’s electric vehicle sector and strengthening the foundations for a more sustainable transport system.
