China publish ethical criteria for human genome editing research

The requirements for conducting such work are also prescribed

The Ministry of Science and Technology of China has published ethical guidelines for scientific research in the field of human genome editing. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Chinese experts emphasise that such work should be in line with the principles of respect for the individual, equality and justice, as well as openness and transparency.

During clinical trials, it is recommended that a full assessment of disease severity and potential risks be made to balance actions and precautions.

The guidelines set out general requirements for human genome editing trials, which include reasonable objectives, protection of research participants, appropriate qualifications and conditions, and informed consent.

Specific conditions are set out in relation to the handling of residual samples and conditions for the use of somatic cell genome editing strategies at different stages of research: basic, preclinical and clinical.
