Сhina strengthens air pollution control to limit severe pollution days to under 1% annually

China is intensifying its efforts to eliminate heavy air pollution and restrict the occurrence of severe pollution days to below 1 per cent per year, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE). Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, the ministry highlighted significant improvements in air quality over the past five years, with the national percentage of heavily polluted days dropping to 0.9 per cent in 2024, in line with official targets.

Beijing recorded just two days of severe pollution in 2024, marking a historic low, as reported by CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.

To address air pollution, the MEE will guide local governments in intensifying pollution control measures. Key initiatives include phasing out outdated industrial facilities, introducing ultra-low emissions technology in key sectors, promoting clean heating solutions, and enhancing emissions control for vehicles and other mobile pollution sources. Additionally, authorities will target non-point source pollution, aiming for a fundamental reduction in overall emissions.

These measures are part of China's long-term strategy to improve air quality nationwide, ensuring continued progress towards minimising the impact of severe pollution on public health and the environment, the source claims.
