China unveils one of world's largest manganese deposits with over 200 million metric tonnes of potential reserves
In a remarkable discovery, Chinese geologists have identified an extensive manganese deposit in central China, with potential reserves surpassing 200 million metric tonnes, according to a report released by the Geophysical and Geochemical Survey Institute of Hunan Province. Approximately 84 million tonnes of manganese ore have already been identified, offering new prospects for industrial development.
Manganese is a critical component for key sectors including steel manufacturing, new energy technologies, and advanced material production, as reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS. The discovery underscores the significance of local reserves in securing a reliable domestic supply of manganese, a resource that China primarily imports to meet its high industrial demand.
Recent drilling activities in the region revealed a significant manganese ore body with promising industrial applications, reaching depths over 1,016 meters. This deep-seated manganese deposit could transform supply chains and bolster domestic production to meet the increasing demands of China’s steel, technology, and energy sectors.
As China currently consumes millions of tonnes of manganese annually, the newfound deposit is expected to ease reliance on imports and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities.
