Durban hosts an event to honour the BRICS Sherpa in South Africa

An event was held in Durban to honour the BRICS Sherpa to South Africa, ambassador Anil Sooklal, for his assistance to the Minister of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, during the recent 15th BRICS summit in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Sooklal was praised for his work leading up to the summit, which included meetings of foreign ministers and Sherpas, as reported by Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.

The summit was praised for the success of the BRICS-Africa and BRICS+ formats, as well as for hosting some 60 countries, including heads of state and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in what was the largest gathering of leaders from the Global South.

"If you look at the recently concluded BRICS summit, one of the points we had to negotiate was human rights," noted Sooklal.

According to the BRICS Sherpa in South Africa, December will mark the 75th anniversary of the UN Charter on Human Rights and it is an important document in terms of governing intergovernmental relations on human rights.

"But human rights is not something that came into existence in 1948, it is something that is in-built in all our cultures and traditions, it has been around since time immemorial," emphasised the ambassador.
