Egypt unveils innovative device to combat Palm Weevil infestation and boost agricultural sector

The device achieved an efficacy rate exceeding 90 per cent in tests conducted

The Egyptian Electronics Research Institute, affiliated to the Ministry of Scientific Research, has introduced an innovative device capable of eliminating over 90 per cent of the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), an invasive pest that poses a significant threat to Egypt’s agricultural sector and the wider Arab region. The announcement was made during the "Investment Forum" conference, as reported by MENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The event aimed to showcase technological advancements and transform innovations into viable industrial products as part of a national initiative to localise electronic and information manufacturing technologies.

According to the source, the device achieved an efficacy rate exceeding 90 per cent in tests conducted in collaboration with various institutions and provinces.

"The device is safer and more effective than traditional pesticide-based methods. It protects the environment and significantly reduces financial costs, which are at least four times lower compared to conventional techniques, while avoiding the environmental and health hazards associated with these methods," explained Khaled Fawzy, a researcher at the Electronics Research Institute.

The experts also emphasised the importance of adopting environmentally friendly solutions to combat the invasive palm weevil and supporting applied research that benefits various economic sectors.
