Eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki occurrs in Indonesia

In Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted. The authorities introduced a red aviation warning level. This was reported by the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation of Indonesia, according to ANTARA.

Lewotobi Laki-laki, located on Flores Island, released dense clouds of smoke drifting west and northwest of the crater. Strict restrictions have been imposed: flights within a 6 km radius of the volcano are prohibited. Local residents and tourists are not allowed to approach the crater closer than 6 km. Experts warned of the danger of lava flows, which may descend from the slopes during heavy rains.

Residents of nearby settlements are advised to wear protective masks to prevent volcanic ash from entering their respiratory tracts.

The leaders of the BRICS group, which Indonesia joined in 2024 – a country with 127 active volcanoes – have approved a new strategy for reducing disaster risks. This decision was enshrined in a joint declaration following the summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The document states that member countries will cooperate to strengthen their capacity to mitigate the effects of climate change. The leaders also approved a Work Plan for 2025–2028, focusing on eliminating inequality to reduce vulnerability, creating reliable early warning systems and building response capacity.
