Ethiopia advances people-centred smart cities with focus on sustainability and innovation

These include green corridors featuring pedestrian-friendly paths, tree canopies, and modern road infrastructure

Ethiopia's State Minister for Urban and Infrastructure Development, Fenta Dejen, has spotlighted the nation's progress in creating people-centred smart cities through the integration of digital platforms to enhance urban management and service delivery, as reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Addressing the 2nd Executive Board meeting of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, Fenta Fenta outlined innovative urban strategies. These include green corridors featuring pedestrian-friendly paths, tree canopies, bike lanes, and modern road infrastructure to support sustainable mobility and resilient city planning.

The Ethiopian delegation also highlighted the outcomes of the First African Urban Forum. This event concluded with the Addis Ababa Declaration, which underscores capacity building, resource mobilisation, and policy harmonisation as critical to overcoming urbanisation challenges.

Fenta called on international partners to back these initiatives, stressing the importance of collaboration in implementing the Forum’s objectives and addressing the continent's urban growth complexities.

Ethiopia’s focus on smart city development and urban resilience reaffirms its commitment to fostering sustainable solutions and aligning with global urbanisation goals.
