Ethiopia and Russia expand climate cooperation with agreement on environmental protection

The nations are intensifying environmental collaboration through agreements aimed at sustainable development

Ethiopia and Russia have committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation in advancing environmental protection and reform.

This pledge follows a meeting between Lelise Neme, Director General of the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), and Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, where both nations discussed strategic initiatives for sustainable environmental management. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The two sides agreed to collaborate on key areas, including experience sharing, pollution control, solid waste management, ecosystem conservation, and the transfer of green technologies. They also underlined the need for creating strong links between public institutions, private enterprises, and research organisations to promote evidence-based solutions.

The two countries recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on climate change and low-carbon initiatives during COP29, underscoring their commitment to addressing global environmental challenges.

The agreement focuses on shared goals such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable financing, and the development of carbon markets. A bilateral working group will be established within six months to advance joint climate projects and exchange expertise on carbon regulation mechanisms. Both nations envision this cooperation as a cornerstone for broader environmental reforms and a step toward fulfilling their Paris Agreement commitments.
