Ethiopia launches US$3.28 million initiative to revolutionise vaccine production

Ethiopia has taken a new step towards bolstering its healthcare infrastructure with the launch of a US$3.28 million project aimed at developing sustainable vaccine research and manufacturing capabilities. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, is spearheading the initiative to reduce the country’s reliance on imported vaccines and strengthen its public health resilience.

The project seeks to empower Ethiopia to address current and future health challenges through local solutions. By establishing robust vaccine manufacturing capabilities, it is expected to accelerate the country’s response to health crises, improve public health outcomes, and stimulate scientific and industrial growth in the region.

The project highlights two main priorities: global experience sharing and targeted training programmes. Ethiopian health officials and scientists will visit leading global vaccine manufacturing facilities to adopt best practices and set benchmarks for local vaccine research and production.

Moreover, through cutting-edge training initiatives, Ethiopian experts will acquire advanced skills in vaccine production, fostering a skilled workforce to drive the country’s vaccine manufacturing ambitions.

These efforts aim to lay the groundwork for a proficient and sustainable vaccine production industry, aligned with Ethiopia’s broader healthcare goals. With over 120 million people, Ethiopia is Africa’s second-most populous nation, making vaccine self-sufficiency critical for long-term public health goals.
