Ethiopia's revenue from electricity exports tops US$1bn in 1.5 years

The country plans to further increase supplies

Ethiopia has earned more than US$1 billion from exporting electricity to neighbouring countries in 18 months. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, citing the head of the country's Ministry of Water and Energy, Habtamu Itefa. Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya are among the main importers.

Habtamu Itefa pointed out that about 93 per cent of Ethiopia's electricity is generated through hydropower and that this guarantees low environmental damage. He also revealed plans to expand electricity exports to South Sudan.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the country is endeavouring to increase exports in the power sector.

For this purpose, various projects are being implemented, among them the construction of a hydroelectric power plant called Ethiopia's Great Renaissance Dam.
