Ethiopia has unveiled a new Phytosanitary Capacity Development Strategy (2026–2030) designed to modernise its agriculture sector and boost economic output, according to ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
Developed by the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the initiative was presented at a validation workshop in Addis Ababa.
Driba Kuma, Director-General of the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority, said the strategy will act as a national roadmap for upgrading phytosanitary services, reducing crop losses from pests and strengthening export potential.
According to the report, the five-year plan aims to strengthen legislation, upgrade infrastructure, and enhance human and institutional capacity. It will also introduce modern tools such as digital surveillance systems, diagnostic technologies, and improved information management.
Officials say the strategy will both protect Ethiopia’s biodiversity and cultural heritage and expand safe market opportunities for millions of farmers.
