Ethiopian official: By fostering innovation in agriculture, clean energy, and healthcare, we can create jobs
Belete Molla Minister of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia highlighted the achievement of the goals of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on poverty eradication in Africa. Noting the growing number of people living in extreme poverty across the continent, Belete emphasised the importance of harnessing innovation to create opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture, clean energy and health, which will ultimately help lift millions of people out of poverty.
According to Belete, active investment and co-operation in science, technology and innovation is critical to really drive innovation in Africa. He called for increased investment in research institutes and universities to develop customised solutions to Africa's challenges, as well as empowering women and youth as integral agents of progress.
In addition, Belete emphasised the need for effective institutions to develop policies and foster a culture of innovation. Collaboration between governments, business, academia, civil society and the international community is necessary to share knowledge and resources to achieve common goals. This is reported by ENA.
Minister Belete cited Ethiopia's initiatives to transform the food system and agricultural practices. Initiatives aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, achieving self-sufficiency and addressing climate change were being actively pursued, with a focus on providing farmers with access to basic resources and technology.
In addition to agricultural development, Ethiopia had recently updated its science and technology policy to promote innovation and the uptake of new technologies. These efforts are reflected in the national digital transformation strategy, Digital Ethiopia 2025, aimed at harnessing technology for sustainable development.
As Africa overcomes the challenges of poverty and development, Ethiopia is a beacon of progress and innovation, demonstrating the positive impact that a strategic focus on agriculture and technology can have on the continent's future prosperity.
