Expert: G20 mechanisms to strengthen interaction between scientists to address global challenges

The meeting of the “Group of Twenty” in Johannesburg will open new opportunities for scientific cooperation

The upcoming summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) will become an important platform for the development of international scientific cooperation in the interests of sustainable development. This opinion was expressed in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS by Irina Kuklina, Executive Director of International Centre for Innovation in Science, Technology and Education.

According to the expert, science and technology are inseparable from the development of humanity. The development of sustainable energy, modern healthcare systems and measures for adapting to climate change are impossible without the contribution of scientists. Kuklina described the mechanisms of the G20, in particular the round table of science advisers, which has been actively functioning since 2023, as an important tool for strengthening this interaction.

“I hope that these instruments will, firstly, gain greater strength and give scientists the opportunity to cooperate more purposefully on the most pressing issues we face today,” the expert added.

Kuklina noted that scientific activity has always had an international character, and interaction between researchers is standard practice. The expert also drew attention to the importance of scientific cooperation for improving the quality of life in remote regions of the BRICS and G20 countries. It is precisely there that the application of new technologies and the exchange of knowledge can bring tangible results, opening access to modern solutions in the fields of energy and medicine.

“When we speak about the G20, at the same time I would still mention the BRICS countries. Many of them are regional powers for whom the lives of people not in large cities but in remote villages and settlements are extremely important and highly significant. Without science, it will be difficult for us to manage here,” Kuklina added.

The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which will take place this year on 22–23 November.
