Experts clears myth on radiation by mobile towers

An expert panel of senior telecommunications officers and doctors clarified the myth of mobile radiation.

The Tamil Nadu Licence Service Area (LSA) unit ofDepartment of Telecommunications (DoT) organised an “Awareness Workshop on EMF Radiation”in Chennai recently.

As part of DoT’s ongoing public advocacy programme, the session was organised to dispel myths around EMF radiation and address unfounded fears of citizens by presentingcredible scientific evidence.

An expert panel comprising of senior officers from the telecom department along with doctors, addressed concerns of citizens while also debunking myths and misinformation related to health hazards connected with radiation from mobile towers.

Speaking to Trinity Mirror on Electro Magnetic Radiation by mobile towers R Balaji Prasad, DDG (Compliance), DoT and Dr. TK Joshi, Advisor to Health Minister clarified the myth on mobile radiations.

They said “There is no cause for alarm regarding possible ill-effects on human health by electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from cellphone towers and cellphones. This is because India’s norms are 10 times stricter than the limits prescribed by the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and are in adherence to the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

There are no side effects of these radiations seen on human beings. The WHO has studied over 25,000 articles and has concluded that there is no correlation between mobile tower radiation and human health.

The topic of electromagnetic radiation, including its impact on human health and the environment is surrounded by a lot of misunderstanding. The most common myth regarding EMF is that it causes headaches, anxiety, depression, and nausea.

The government has taken multiple steps to address the concerns of citizens while also debunking myths and misinformation related to health hazards connected with radiation from mobile towers.
