Han Xuling, CGTN commentator: Greater BRICS plays key role in uniting Global South countries

Against the backdrop of growing challenges – from protectionism to global trade instability – the BRICS countries are ready to jointly promote a fairer model of global governance and uphold a multilateral order centred on the UN. This was stated by Han Xuling, CGTN commentator, in an exclusive interview with CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.

“Cooperation within the Greater BRICS is of immense importance for the cohesion of Global South countries. Since its founding nearly 20 years ago, BRICS unites more than half of the world’s population. It accounts for about 30 per cent of global GDP, while its contribution to global economic growth exceeds 50 per cent,” the expert noted.

According to him, the member states also advance the creation of a fairer climate governance mechanism and expand ties in renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. Han Xuling added that openness and inclusivity have always been distinctive features of BRICS cooperation.

The CGTN commentator is convinced that China’s modernisation can serve as a benchmark for the member countries. He emphasised that Beijing is actively increasing investments in scientific and technological research and developing its industrial base. Furthermore, China has demonstrated a successful poverty eradication experience – an approach that, in his view, could be adapted by other BRICS countries for their national poverty reduction strategies.

Han Xuling also drew attention to the strong ties between China and Russia within the grouping.

“The interaction between China and Russia is indispensable for advancing cooperation within the Greater BRICS. As permanent members of the UN Security Council, these countries play a vital role in global affairs, providing solid political support for BRICS countries on the international stage,” he added.

The BRICS summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro on 6–7 July and will be the main event of Brazil’s chairmanship of the group.
