In Brazil, food prices rose nearly 8% in 2021
Data released by the National Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) shows that, on average, food prices rose by 7.94% in Brazil in 2021. Despite the negative result, this number represents a slowdown compared to 2020, when the country saw growth of 14.09%. Reported by TV CULTURA, a partner of the TV BRICS network.
According to the results obtained by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), prices of food products such as chicken, eggs, beef, coffee, sugar and tomatoes rose most of all. Products such as rice and beans, for example, showed a decline in their value last year. The price of soybean oil in the observed period slowed down its growth.
One of the factors that influenced food inflation was climate problems, such as, for example, the water crisis. Another problem was the supply, which has become smaller after the appreciation of the US dollar, which makes it more profitable for producers to export than to sell in their own country. The highest growth was shown by such proteins as chicken cuts (29.85%) and eggs (13.24%).
