India accelerates clean energy push, targets 500 GW capacity by 2030

India has emerged as one of the world’s leading performers in climate action, having already met key renewable energy targets well ahead of schedule and now setting its sights on achieving 500 gigawatts of clean energy capacity by 2030.

Speaking in New Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the country ranks among the top performers globally in delivering on its climate commitments, including the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs). He noted that India has consistently placed among the top countries within the G20 for its progress.

The minister highlighted a significant acceleration in renewable energy deployment over the past decade. Earlier plans to install 20 GW of solar capacity over nearly ten years were expanded to 100 GW, a target that was successfully delivered within the revised timeframe.

Alongside its environmental agenda, India is strengthening international economic engagement, with ongoing discussions on trade and partnership frameworks across multiple regions, including Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Eurasia. The government views climate policy and economic growth as closely interconnected, with clean energy seen as a driver of industrial development and global competitiveness.

Authorities emphasise that climate action in India has evolved into an economically viable strategy, supported by innovation, emerging technologies and a favourable business environment. Renewable energy expansion is also contributing to job creation and opening new export opportunities in equipment, technology and services.

According to IANS, a partner of TV BRICS, structural reforms in the power sector have further supported this transition, including the development of a unified national electricity grid and the expansion of transmission infrastructure to accommodate growing renewable capacity. Officials stress the importance of maintaining stable base-load energy alongside intermittent renewable sources.

The government also highlighted the role of efficiency and behavioural change in meeting climate targets, calling for coordinated efforts from households, industries and institutions to reduce energy consumption and improve sustainability practices.
