India celebrates National Day of Unity
On October 31, India celebrates National Day of Unity (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas), established in 2014 in honor of Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the creators of the Indian Constitution, who made a huge contribution to unification of India. For his significant contribution Patel is called Bismarck of India, Sardar (leader) and Iron Man of India.
Vallabhbhai Patel took an active part in the Indian independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi has repeatedly noted his important role in the successful conduct of protests against the colonial authorities.
After India gained independence, Patel served as Deputy Prime Minister and was also the first Home Minister of India. Vallabhbhai Patel played a key role in unification of the princely states and the solution of many problems that arose after the collapse of British India and the formation of two independent states - India and Pakistan. He also took an active part in creating the administrative services of India, which made it possible to establish peace and order in the country.
On October 31, 2018, the inauguration of the Statue of Unity, constructed in honor of Vallabhbhai Patel, took place on the bank of the Narmada River in the state of Gujarat. The monument became the highest in the world (182 meters).
