India launches first hydrogen highways to drive clean mobility

New corridors with refuelling stations set to support long-haul hydrogen freight transport

India has inaugurated its first hydrogen highways, a landmark step in advancing the country’s clean mobility agenda and accelerating the transition towards green hydrogen. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The new initiative introduces hydrogen fuelling stations along key national highway corridors, enabling the operation of hydrogen-powered trucks and freight vehicles over long distances. As part of large-scale pilot trials, dozens of vehicles are already being deployed, supported by nine planned refuelling stations across ten strategic routes.

Officials emphasised that hydrogen is expected to play a central role in reducing India’s reliance on fossil fuels, cutting energy import costs, and paving the way for sustainable growth in the transport sector.

According to the source, by combining infrastructure development with policy support and international cooperation, India aims to position itself as a global leader in green hydrogen, with the hydrogen highways serving as a cornerstone of this transformation.
