India plans to grow potatoes in the air
Specialists of the Shamgarh Potato Technology Center are planning to launch the production of potatoes by the aeroponics method by September. Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in the air without soil and other nutrient media, a correspondent for tvbrics.com reports with reference to The Tribune newspaper.
Potatoes in India are one of the main products. The consumption of this vegetable is about 34 kg per year per capita, and in 30 years the farmers will need to produce 125 million tons per year. To be enough for everyone, Indian scientists decided to grow potatoes not in the ground, but in air.
Plants will be suspended in the air in a dark greenhouse chamber, and their roots will be enriched with nutrients through pressure nozzles.
Indian scientists believe that threat of diseases transmitted to vegetables through the soil is reduced with this method. You can also save on fertilizers: they will be used by 30-40% less compared to the traditional method. In addition, this technology should double the harvest periods.
At present, short-season varieties of potato are rapidly degenerating, and tubers are poorly stored. However, aeroponics will allow to breed high-yielding varieties: 30-50 mini-tubers per plant, compared to 8 mini-tubers - when grown in the soil.
It is planned to create three divisions of potato aeroponics: for the production of seeds, for the production of early-yielding varieties and for the production of varieties resistant to climate changes.
