India ranks among G20’s top climate performers, targeting 500 GW of clean energy by 2030
Minister highlights early renewable milestones and expanding global partnerships as drivers of sustainable growth
India has emerged as one of the leading countries in the G20 in meeting climate commitments, with plans to scale up its clean energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, reports IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
The minister stated that India consistently ranks among the top three G20 nations in fulfilling its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline each country’s strategy to address climate change under the Paris Agreement.
Originally, India aimed to develop 20 GW of solar power over a period of nearly a decade. However, the target was significantly revised to 100 GW in 2014 and successfully achieved within the planned timeframe. Building on this progress, the country has now set a more ambitious goal of reaching 500 GW of clean energy capacity by the end of the decade.
According to Goyal, India’s approach to climate action has evolved over the past ten years from a policy obligation into an economically viable growth strategy. He noted that the expansion of renewable energy has contributed to job creation and is strengthening the country’s future export potential in sectors such as energy, technology and services.
The minister also pointed to growing international engagement, with multiple countries and regions currently in discussions with India on trade and economic cooperation. These include partners across Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Eurasia, reflecting the country’s increasing role in global economic integration.
In addition, Goyal outlined key structural reforms in the energy sector, including the development of a unified national power grid under the “One Nation, One Grid” initiative, expansion of transmission infrastructure and the revival of previously stalled energy projects.
He also stressed the importance of efficiency and responsible consumption, encouraging practical measures such as conserving water, reducing unnecessary electricity use and improving energy efficiency across households and industries.
India’s progress in climate action, combined with sustained economic growth, positions the country as a key player in advancing global sustainability efforts while maintaining development momentum.
