India shows significant progress in combating climate change

The country also aims to increase the share of electricity generated by non-fossil fuels and strengthen forest cover

The Economic Survey 2023–24 confirms that India has already aimed at its initial emission reduction targets, increased its share of renewable energy, and is actively participating in international climate change initiatives. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

India's key environmental achievements:

  • Reducing emissions intensity: India has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions relative to its GDP by 33 per cent from 2005 to 2019, meeting its target 11 years ahead of schedule.

  • Increasing the share of renewable energy: India's share of non-fossil energy capacity has increased from 32 per cent in 2014 to 45.4 per cent in 2024.

  • International initiatives: India is leading a number of international programmes to combat climate change, such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), One World, One Solar, One Grid, and others.

  • Domestic Policy: India has launched programmes aimed at renewable energy, such as the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana and the Green Hydrogen Mission.

The Economic Survey also emphasises the need for further action to integrate climate change strategies into national policy and development planning to ensure sustainable economic development in the long term.
