India unveils US$5 billion plan to transform agricultural sector
India has unveiled projects worth about US$5 billion to modernise its agricultural and allied sectors, including food processing, animal husbandry, and fisheries. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
The government said the reforms are designed to make India not only self-sufficient in food production but also a major exporter to global markets. Recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) reductions are expected to deliver further benefits to rural communities and smallholder farmers.
The report noted that, over the past 11 years, agricultural exports have nearly doubled, while grain, fruit, and vegetable production have recorded substantial growth. India now ranks first globally in milk production.
Authorities have urged farmers to diversify crops beyond wheat and rice, placing greater emphasis on pulses to secure the nation’s protein needs and reduce import dependency.
Newly inaugurated facilities include centres of excellence, IVF laboratories, artificial insemination training centres, and milk and fish-feed plants across several states.
