IndOS - India's answer to iOS and Android
This operating system, given the right circumstances, will soon replace the world's two leading giants, as reported by Mail.ru portal.
According to media reports, India's leadership has long been planning to switch to an alternative OS to ensure independence from the two leading giants. Attempts were made to develop its own operating system based on Linux, but the idea failed to materialise.
The vast majority of users in the country are Android adherents (95%), 4% use iOS and 1% work with various other operating systems. The authorities want to make a domestic system for themselves, just as they do with Aurora and other software in Russia.
Will IndOS take root
Not impossible. Outside the country, it will not be in high demand and popularity, but at home it could very well be on a par with iOS and Android. India is among the top smartphone makers in the world. If a law is passed mandating pre-installed applications on IndOS, the OS will be ubiquitous.
What is known about IndOS
The authorities are announcing IndOS as another attempt by India to gain a foothold in the mobile OS market.
No details of IndOS have yet been posted on the internet. It is possible that a Linux firmware variant is planned with the ability to connect to Android apps, and it will have Indian services downloaded by default.
