Iran celebrates International Donor Day

This is a day established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2004

Every year on 14 June, countries around the world come together to celebrate World Blood Donor Day, highlighting the vital role blood donors play in saving lives and improving health.

The event serves to raise awareness of the importance of safe blood and its products, and expresses gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving blood donations.

The theme of this year's World Blood Donor Day is "20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors!”, chosen to mark the 20th anniversary and recognise the profound impact of blood donation on both patients and donors.

Iran has an average blood donation rate of 26 per thousand people, which compares favourably with other nations. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the World Health Organisation, the blood donation rate in high-income countries averages 31.5 donations per 1,000 people, compared to 16.4 donations in upper-middle-income countries, 6.6 donations in lower-middle-income countries, and 5.0 donations in low-income countries.

During the last Iranian calendar year, more than 2.223 million blood donations were recorded in the country.
