Iran discovers Bronze Age burial site during emergency excavations

Emergency archaeological excavations have uncovered a significant Bronze Age burial site in the Kalateh-ye Yavari area of North Khorasan Province, Iran. This discovery has led to an important exploration of ancient human remains and artefacts, providing insights into the early civilisations of the region. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

The excavation, carried out under the supervision of Iran's Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, began after the accidental discovery of the site during local construction works in 2021. The most recent excavation phase was initiated in 2023 following a magnetic survey.

Archaeologist Ali Akbar Vahdati, the head of the excavation team, confirmed the discovery of four burial chambers, containing artefacts like pottery, bronze pins, and stone or bone beads – objects typical of the Greater Khorasan civilisation. These findings suggest deep cultural and political links across eastern Iran during the Bronze Age.

The simple pit graves, scattered across the ancient settlement, have become a focal point for understanding the region's prehistoric burial customs. Archaeologists are working swiftly to document and preserve the site, as construction in the area has been temporarily halted.

The excavation will continue until the site is fully explored and the historical artefacts are safely preserved.
