Iran embraces renewable energy with solar-hydro synergy

Iran is embarking on a significant shift in its energy strategy toward sustainability by integrating solar energy with its existing hydroelectric infrastructure. 

A recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the government and the Renewable Energy and Electricity Efficiency Organisation (SATBA) outlines plans to build solar power plants near hydroelectric dams, aiming to generate 500 megawatts of new solar capacity. 

This dual approach is expected to strengthen grid reliability, reduce emissions, and support Iran’s long-term energy goals, as reported by Press TV, a partner of TV BRICS.

A key innovation in this strategy is the development of floating solar power plants. The country is turning to its reservoirs and dam networks to house solar panels on floating platforms. The complementary nature of solar and hydroelectric power is central to the plan’s success. While solar panels produce energy during the day, hydropower can be used to supply electricity at night or during periods of low sunlight.

A pilot project has already demonstrated the potential of this approach, which not only saves space but also enhances panel efficiency through natural cooling and reduces water evaporation.
