Iran launches drones to combat drought and increase rainfall

This technology can contribute to increasing rainfall by between 15% and 20%

Iran has announced the start of manufacturing drones designed for cloud seeding, in a step considered innovative at the global level.

Alalam News, a media partner of TV BRICS, reported that this project is part of Iran’s efforts to address the challenges of drought and water scarcity, which significantly affect agriculture and daily life in the country.

In this context, the Head of the Organisation for the Development and Exploitation of New Aerial Water Technologies in Iran confirmed that the use of drones for cloud seeding is a new subject worldwide, noting that Iran has already begun building drones specifically for this purpose.

The Iranian official explained that this technology can contribute to increasing rainfall by between 15 per cent and 20 per cent, which boosts the country’s ability to cope with water shortages and strengthens its efforts in combating drought.

This project comes within the framework of the Iranian government’s efforts to develop innovative technologies in water resource management and to improve agricultural production, with a focus on utilising modern technology to secure water for agricultural and humanitarian purposes.

BRICS countries are working on implementing innovative projects to address the challenges of drought and water scarcity that affect agriculture.

In Brazil, efforts continue to enhance advanced irrigation technologies and develop systems for sustainable water management. The Brazilian government has announced a joint project between Brazil and China to build a laboratory dedicated to developing artificial intelligence and small-scale machinery for family farming in the country’s semi-arid regions.

In India, scientists have launched projects to improve agricultural water management technologies using artificial intelligence in the agricultural sector, helping to enhance irrigation efficiency, according to IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

Thailand is also working to expand its weather modification programme, known as the Royal Rainmaking Project, to address drought challenges and enhance agricultural activity in various parts of the country. The Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a media partner of TV BRICS, reported that the relevant authorities carried out more than 2,000 flights between February and August 2025, achieving rainfall in over 95 per cent of the operations.
