Iran opens first agricultural irradiation centre in Ardabil

Iran has inaugurated its first agricultural irradiation centre in the northwest province of Ardabil. The facility, opened in the presence of the country’s agriculture minister and the head of the Atomic Energy Organization, is designed to enhance food preservation and expand export potential, reports Press TV, a partner of TV BRICS.

Ardabil, which accounts for about 4 per cent of Iran’s agricultural output, will see up to 15,000 tons of produce irradiated annually in its first phase, with plans to scale up production.

Irradiation uses controlled doses of ionising radiation to extend the shelf life of perishable goods, eliminate pests, and improve food safety. The technology aims to help farmers overcome challenges such as drought, unpredictable weather, pest infestations, and post-harvest losses.

By preserving fruits, vegetables, and other crops longer without chemicals, producers can access distant markets and comply with strict international import standards, boosting competitiveness abroad.

According to the report, the centre is part of a broader national strategy to use nuclear science for peaceful purposes. It serves as a hub for knowledge transfer and technical training, equipping local professionals with expertise in radiation technology, food safety, and quality control.
