Iran promotes Clean Air Week to combat pollution and raise environmental awareness

The Department of Environment (DOE) in Iran has announced the observance of National Clean Air Week from 18 to 22 January, under the theme “National determination for clean air with renewable energy.” This initiative aims to spotlight the urgent need for cleaner air and the pivotal role of renewable energy in achieving it. Each year, 19 January is celebrated as National Clean Air Day, focusing on maintaining air quality and encouraging public involvement in environmental protection. This year’s Clean Air Week dedicates each day to specific themes:

• 18 January: Clean Air Day;

• 19 January: Energy and Environment;

• 20 January: Clean Air Law and Environment;

• 21 January: Monitoring, New Technologies, Environment;

• 22 January: Transportation and Environment.

In August 2024, Shina Ansari, head of the DOE, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to addressing air pollution through robust policy implementation and effective monitoring. She highlighted key strategies such as decommissioning outdated vehicles, improving fuel and vehicle quality, expanding public transportation, securing resources, and curbing industrial emissions.

The initiative mandates responsibilities across various governmental bodies, including the Ministries of Interior, Oil, Energy, Transport, Industry, Agriculture, and others. A notable initiative within this framework is the Ministry of Oil’s three-year plan to significantly reduce sulphur levels in diesel fuel to meet national standards.

Clean Air Week also aligns with global efforts, such as the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, observed annually on 7 September.
