Iranian researchers develop nanocomposite hydrogel to boost oil reservoir efficiency
Smart hydrogel reduces sand production, lowers costs, and increases oil recovery
A team of Iranian scientists has developed an intelligent nanocomposite hydrogel designed to control sand production in oil reservoirs, a common challenge that raises operational costs and damages infrastructure. The innovation could improve oil recovery.
Researchers created the hydrogel using domestic nanotechnology expertise. The material swells in water but contracts in oil, simultaneously reducing water content and enhancing oil flow.
It also stabilises reservoir sand, preventing blockages without harming the formation. This is reported by IRNA, a partner of TV BRICS.
The hydrogel’s three-dimensional structure, reinforced with nanoparticles, provides thermal stability and mechanical strength suitable for harsh reservoir conditions.
This development comes as technological innovations are advancing rapidly across multiple sectors. In China, researchers have unveiled a breakthrough lithium battery with unprecedented energy density, offering improved performance and longevity for electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and robotics. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Meanwhile, Dubai has conducted the first test flight of an electric air taxi, demonstrating clean, efficient urban transport that integrates with existing public transport systems, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.
Together, these innovations underscore how new technologies are enhancing capabilities across traditional industries such as oil production, as well as emerging sectors including renewable energy, mobility, and advanced electronics.
